Why UV Protection is Important, Even on Cloudy Days

Sunglasses are not just a fashion accessory. They are the protection your eyes deserve every day, even when the sun isn't shining.

Зошто УВ заштитата е важна, дури и во облачни денови

Most people think of sunglasses as something they wear on bright summer days. But the truth is that your eyes need sun protection all year round, even when the sky is grey.

UV rays don’t take a day off. And the damage they cause accumulates slowly, over years, without you noticing.

Here’s what everyone needs to know about UV protection and your eyes.

What UV Rays Actually Do to Your Eyes

Ultraviolet rays from the sun are invisible, but their effects are very real. Without protection, prolonged exposure can lead to:

  • Cataracts, a clouding of the eye’s lens that affects vision and often requires surgery later in life.
  • Macular degeneration, one of the leading causes of vision loss in older adults.
  • Photokeratitis, essentially a corneal sunburn, causing pain, redness, and temporary blurred vision.
  • Pterygium, a growth on the white part of the eye caused by long-term sun exposure.
  • Premature aging of the delicate skin around the eyes, including wrinkles and dark spots.

The damage is cumulative. Every hour of unprotected exposure adds up over a lifetime.

Cloudy Days Are Not Safe Days

This part is what most people get wrong. Up to 80% of UV rays penetrate clouds. That means even on cloudy days, your eyes are still exposed.

The same goes for:

  • Snow, which reflects up to 80% of UV rays back at you
  • Water and sand at the beach
  • Driving, where the windshield blocks some UV, but side windows often don’t

If you see daylight, your eyes are getting UV. Period.

Not All Sunglasses Are Created Equal

Here’s something important. Dark lenses do not mean UV protection.

Cheap sunglasses with dark tinted lenses but no UV coating can actually be worse than wearing nothing. Why? Because the dark lens makes your pupil dilate to let in more light, meaning more UV gets to the back of your eye.

When shopping for sunglasses, look for:

  • 100% UV protection or UV400, both of which mean the lens blocks all UVA and UVB rays
  • Polarized lenses, which also reduce glare from reflective surfaces like water and roads
  • Proper fit, so that sunlight cannot sneak in from the sides

At Optika Džani Zaro, every pair of sunglasses we sell offers complete UV protection. Whether you choose Ray-Ban, Gucci, Avanglion, or any other brand from our store, your eyes are protected.

Who Needs UV Protection the Most

Everyone benefits from sunglasses, but some people need them even more:

  • Children, whose eyes are more sensitive and let in more UV than adult eyes
  • People who work outdoors, including drivers, construction workers, and farmers
  • People with light-colored eyes, who are more sensitive to UV exposure
  • Anyone who has had eye surgery, including cataract or LASIK procedures

Make It a Habit

Wearing sunglasses every time you step outside is a small habit that pays off for a lifetime. Think of it the same way you think of sunscreen for your skin.

A good pair of sunglasses is not an expense. It’s an investment in your eyesight.
